I took my daughter to the park today to get some practice, and she was moderately cooperative. :-P I would really, really like some C&C on these. Pick them apart. White balance, framing, lighting ratios, whatever comes to mind.

Even the branding is a work in progress so feel free to comment on that too. I don't really need it yet but included it on these just for the sake of feedback.

These were all shot at f/2.8, 1/250, ISO 100, with an SB-600 firing in to a reflective umbrella at camera right on TTL.

1) My personal favorite, but unfortunately the focus is a bit soft on this one.

4) This HORIZONTAL one is just for Derrel ;-)

Thanks!

Hey man, not a lot of c&c from me here but I think you did a good job. I actually like #4 and the horizontal framing the best.

Not much to say except for very cute kid! :D I also like the last one best, probably due to the darker background. The background on the first one is a bit bright IMHO.

You know, the first shot has great expression and emotion, but the tree in the upper right corner is distracting my eye; I think it might actually be a good idea to move your Orions Byte logo right up to the upper right hand corner!!! Seriously, I think it would greatly improve the shot, by giving her a solid "footing" on the picnic table, and sublimating the tree's base! Just plop that logo right on top of the tree's base!

That's actually a good point. Right now that branding is set up as an export template in Lightroom, so I should probably make a few versions of the template so I can put the logo in different places as required. I'll play with that this weekend. :)

Thanks Darrel!

I let the background go a little over-exposed on purpose, with the intention of creating separation between the subject and background. If I didn't pull that off, please let me know. :)

Watch for horizon line or other line like the grass on #2 cutting trough the head. Good job man. I like the way the catch light look on her eyes.

Ah, didn't catch that - thanks Schwetty!

Indeed; when the horizon line cuts through the head, it creates a feeling of three-dimensionality, and provides depth clues to the human visual system. Gotta be careful doing that...when the subject's head overlaps the horizon line, it makes the person seem almost three-dimensional, almost like she's gonna' pop off the screen and come to life and say something horrible, like, "Daddy! Will you buy me the new Barbie Corvette battery car? It only costs three hundred and ninety-nine dollars-ez at Toys- R-Us!" Don't want people to look too life-like in pictures...

Cutest. Kid. Ever.

Well besides my little man of course ;)

Okay well I had to share this. This is after I've put away all the photo equipment - she decided that the picnic table we'd cleared off for photos was going to be a stage, and she just went to town.
