I was speaking to a local camera shop this week and was told that the cost of photo equipment will be going up by 8 - 10% by early March. They said the Sigam 70-200mm 2.8 lens would probably go up by about $150 as a result.

They claim the reason for this is the yen to dollar exchange rate is very unfavourable and that the Japanese manufacturers will be increasing their costs.

Has anyone else heard this or was this a scare tactic to get me to buy sooner rather than latter?

Hmm... I haven't heard anything like that. I really hope the cost doesn't go up, equipment already cost a lot:meh:

I can see how might be true though. I would do more research on that if I were you because it could be a scare tactic.

Its true canon have already had 10% or so price rises in the US market so that the other companies are following suit makes full sense

Short answer: They will go up

Long answer: We're coming off a back of a recession, the prices of materials have been cheaper than they have been for a while. Now that economies around the world like China, India and Brazil are starting to move on a massive scale, raw materials are becoming expensive. Transport costs are also going up with the increases in petrol, companies based in Japan will also have to compete with a ever falling Yen. These factors all add up and over the next few years particularly the next few months I would expect a price rise from most major manufactures.

Darn!!!! Guess I have to get creative on how to justify another lens to the wife right away!

dPreview noted just recently that Sigma is REDUCING the price on the 70-200/2.8 OS lens by around $300...as I recall, they said they were reducing the MSRP to $1399 from $1699...

Wow, just about had a heart attack after reading that. I feel much better now though as the price drop was for the OS and i bought the non OS.

Thanks for the info though!!

I'm not surprised if prices go up, the dollar is only worth 4 cents.
Inflation is inevitable in a monetary based system. There will come
a time very soon when no one will accept the dollar anymore as it's
not worth anything.
