problem with focusing in the dark

I would think out of focus would cause that blur from some of the experience I have had with shooting pics at night

The Long method:
Set your camera to a max brightness on aperture mode.
Let the camera focus.
Once focused adjust brightness down again and push aperture to F8 or even F12.
Take the shot.

You will find that once you have locked your focus, when you take the shot with the rather closed lens; even if you are a little of the mark - everthying will be in sharp focus. The flash will make up for the lost light.
