Protecting my canon XTI from paintballs :/

Than something was done to the paintballs themselves, because there's no way that they should penetrate that. If a paintball can penetrate hard plastic, than it could penetrate flesh, and they're not designed to do that.

I doubt it, it was at a field paint only tourney.
Maybe "through" isn't exactly the right description. It cracked a hole in the side of the loader. The plastic is a lot more brittle than flesh, which absorbs a lot of the energy
 
You can use a plastic bag. Cut a hole in the bottom just slightly smaller than the front threads of the lens and then put a UV filter on the lens to hold the bag in place around the front threads. Total cost is roughly $0.
