Pumpkin patch pics. C&C please :)

I take a lot of pics of my girls. I'm having issues with very soft images so these have been sharpened using an editing program. C&C? I'm thick-skinned! (Sorry, I have no idea why Photobucket's not re-sizing all these properly)

nice snaps of your girls... i dont know if its the lighting or what it is, but they just really look like snap shots to me.. what settings were you using on your camera.. and what is your camera?

Love your perspective on the first 2. You really got down at or slightly below their eye level which I feel is key in connecting with kids in photos.

This is where I'm having difficulty- Determining what makes the difference between a snapshot and a photograph. It could be the lighting on these, maybe they need cropped? I have a Rebel XT and still pretty new to DSLR's. I haven't ventured out of the "dummy mode" too much at this point, which is what these were shot in. I've also edited these to add a border, which I actually think enhances them, but maybe I'm wrong. Any suggestions?

Thanks! I've been trying to really get down on their level, which sometimes puts me in crazy positions, but I really want to get great pics.

to me this is what determines snapshot or not... IMO, auto mode is terrible.. it really doesnt present good pictures.. it gives them the snapshot look.. because it adjust exctley the same way a p&s does... if your camera has a "p" mode or program mode, thats even better than auto.. i would try that until your ready to use manual settings... with P mode it adjusts the setttings itself, but not the same way auto does.. the pics look much better.. but it doesnt make your flash pop automatically.. so if your going to need flash, while in P mode, you have to turn it on yourself... keep at it.. soon enough you'll be out of dummy mode.

Okay, I think you have alot of potential! I really do, I can tell what your going for, you just need practice on that. but that takes time. For now, learn photoshop and you can achieve almost anything. I use to rely on this, but now that im learning myself I see my self use it less and less...it said it was ok to edit ur pics...so heres what i did....and now they dont look as much like a snap shoot!

I agree the compostion seems good, But maybe going back at a time closer to sunset where the light is not so harsh. in the last picture, the pupkin has hard shadows and too much foliage around it in my opinion-thus making it snap shotty. the first three seem lovely though.

there is a book called understanding exposure, which is awesome, it will help you learn about f.stops and shutter speeds and how they effect your pictures,. I just finished reading it, and I am going to read it again lol
