The contrast of the colored image looks... funny. Almost like it has really bad CA. I don't know how else to explain it.

I love the color. It tells a way better story. With the b/w you can't even tell there are pumpkins. Just two boys and a wagon. As for c&c I would crop out the upper portion so the field of pumpkins goes all the way to the top, also cropping an inch or so off the left.

You couldn't tell that this was a pumpkin patch without seeing it in color?

Between the title and the time of year I never questioned what it was upon first viewing. However, looking again it is not so defined although I am not sure what it could be confused for.

I feel that it's pretty obvious that it's at least a farm. But if you view it at it's full size (11x14) you can make out the pumpkins in the cart.

Fair enough. It's a great shot, love the kid pushing and looking down, appears to be working hard.

awesome moment. imo this carries a photo the vast majority of the way. if i were to change anything it would be the crop as suggested, and the DOF is a bit too shallow for my taste. the pushing kid is just as much the subject, and a the background is so relevant that it wouldn't have hurt the image for it to be in more focus. color or b+w works for me (and i normally dislike b+w).

I completely agree with the DOF issue. To be honest this was a very lucky shot. I was shooting elsewhere, turned my head and saw my kids pushing the cart, framed and snapped it without adjusting settings. I did change adjust the dof, but never got another shot like this one. As far as the crop goes, I'm not fond of custom ratios for the sake of printing. This is 11x14, If I adjust the crop with the same constraints, it looks awkward to me. I figure, with this crop, there's an end to the patch and you can see that they're finished and heading back after a long day of pumpkin picking, and they have a little bit of a hike to get to where they're going lol. I'm probably the only one who sees it like this, but even though I was there, my imagination is able to run wild a bit with the shot. To be honest, this is one of the only shots I've ever taken that I actually don't hate lol.

i totally hear you with the standard printing size and catching what you could at the moment. I also totally agree about including the "end" of the path. the "end" really adds to the story of the shot. so given that, i'd blur the plant on the left and maybe clone out the tent on the upper right. with the DOF being so aggressive, the eye is more so drawn towards sharp items like the plant. either way still a nice shot imo, subject matter is everything and this is a perfect moment/story. the cooperation, the effort/excitement, and the distance left totally works for me.
