Putting a frame round an image using PS6

I've seen quite a few people put these nice neat black frames round their images before posting them on here. I'm using PS6, but never really use it for much more than cropping and reducing image sizes from the original. Can anyone help or point me at a tutorial that describes the process. I tried a search, but wasn't too sure what the proper name for them was.

One way is to increase your canvas size and change your background color.
