Putting together a Portfolio

When compiling a portfolio for applications to universities, does anyone have any tips? Do I want to show as many technical skills as possible? Or stick to what I'm strongest at/stick to my style? Words, or do I let the images speak entirely for themselves? All plain backgrounds, or can I get creative with layouts?
