Question about lighting

Hi everyone. I am a new user to this forum, so please forgive me for asking (stupid?) or already answered questions.

About a year ago I bought a Nikon Coolpix5000. I live in South Africa, and the costs of photographic equipment is really high. I was asked to take photos at a function within the next month. I will basically be photographing people (maybe couples or small groups).

My problem is as follows. I do not have an external flash or other light for my camera. Usually, when taking photo's in low light conditions, I use the build in flash. I feel that this flash alone will not be suitable to take photographs at this event. Red eyes is also a problem I have when using this flash. Sometimes the red-eye reduction causes the subjects to blink.

I will select a place for the photo's to be taken. This event will take place indoors, but at night. Is there any advice anyone can give me for adding a light source, or building some sort of light source to use. I live in a big city, so getting hold of everyday components and electrical fixtures is not a problem, but I will appreciate any advcie in order not to waste my money.

i dont know too much about lighting. but i use a coolpix 5700 and i bought an external flash for it. i have an SB-50DX its not all that expensive compared to other flashes and iv always had good results when using it.

Get a torch/ flashlight & shine it in their faces...

You never know - It could work.

an external flash would be extremely helpful. read up on bounce flash, which will def. be your friend.
