    A difusser would definitely have benefitted #2.

    When doing shots like these, I usually keep a pair of bypass pruners handy to remove some of the distractions as in #1.

    Absolutely. Using Photo Shop CS5, I select the entire pic and de-select what I want in sharp focus. I then use the FILTER->BLUR->LENS BLUR effect and add a touch of noise. I'm not a purest by any stretch of the imagination but, the way my pictures appear is the way I see them in my minds eye.
