RAM?

How much RAM do I need? I plan on buying a new computer. I will be using Photoshop (and the Topaz plugins) and Lightroom. Looking at Sony's sensor, it seems like I might get a 24MP sensor if I buy the D7100 or D400.

I built mine last year specifically for photo editing I put down 16GB of 1333mhz DDR3 G.Skill so I wouldn't have to buy more when I upgrade to Lightroom app that will utilize that much in the future. Otherwise, 8GB of DDR3 would be fine. Don't plan on any gaming, I take it?

When I do panoramas I hit limits when working with 130mpxl images and I have 4GB.

8GB should be plenty, but with the cost of RAM as it is you may as well go 12GB. Anything more I think starts becoming overkill unless you're working with virtual machines.

The only reason to have 16gigs of ram is to stich 10+ shot panoramas in photoshop. Otherwise 8 is fine.

It will be for going online and editing photos. I'm not playing games but may install games if my computer can take it.

I just upgraded my Mac Book Pro to 8GB (from 4) and to an SSD, but that's another story.

I felt the need for more RAM because I have a panorama project going on and 4GB is not enough - as stated above too.
If you can afford 16GB go for 16 as there is nothing to loose!

I think I'll get a 16. I need a 12 but it is 4x2 and 2x2 so I might as well get 16.

Check the photo below. Do this mean i have 3 gigs of ram? If so, i have no problem stitching a panorama of 20 plus shots using photoshop. I used to get an error of not enough ram until i saw someone else post about the same error and this is how they said to fix it. I don't get the error anymore. To get rid of "not enough ram error", open photoshop, go to edit, preferences, performance, and put this in for memory usage, to let photoshop use 1494.

Get as much ram as you can afford, you will never regret having too much. That said, if you can get a minimum of 4 Gig, you will have enough for most situations. Now, if you are like me and have numerous applications, multiple photoshop documents and other things running all at once, 4 gig is probably not enough. But, I am pretty ruthless to my PC.

I have a paltry 8GB of RAM...what I really want is a SSD to replace my current harddrive.
