I was testing out my new light meter and 46" shoot through umbrella and my light meter, balancing out natural and supplemental light.

Hi, James. You should add a pair of pruners to your kit. The overlapping foliage is distracting. If you can't trim the branches that are in the way, carry some light cord with you so you can tie them back out of the way.

It was actually intentional that I shot through the foliage, part of the new photography style that I'm experimenting. The idea is that I'm capturing her at private moment without her knowing. She's looking at my direction yet not knowing that someone is there. Well at least that's the idea. How it comes out is a whole other subject. lol

Shooting though foliage (etc.) is a rather popular style these days. It works well here, except for the one leaf right in front of her right hand. On that topic, her right wrist is bent rather unnaturally, which hurts the photo IMO.

I like this shot. I like trying to use foilage to make a frame so to speak around the subject, and how was it using the light meter? I have just picked one up recently but havn't had it out to work with it.

Light meter was easy to use but I have used a different model before. I got a Sekonic L358 and was trying to balance ambient light + flash. It works well.

Good balance of flash to ambient, but I spotted those "hot" leaves right away. Her wrist looks a bit odd. I really like the color and balance between flash and the open shade...looks VERY realistic!!! Cute model! Lovely hair she has and a pretty skin tone. A LOT of japanese photographers use the out of focus foreground bokeh trick---that is something that is super-popular among Eastern photographers (Eastern as in from the orient, as opposed to western or occidental people), and it is something that many people here in the west do not like. It is actually very much loathed by certain people; I have had several discussions about this with non-photographer editors, who absolutely loathed OOF foreground bokeh and or OOF foreground objects...of course, these were visually not the most sophisticated viewers...pearls before swine and all that...

Oh wow, thanks Derrel. Yeah that was my goal for this shoot, finding the right balance. The meter obviously helped me nailed it quicker than my own estimate.

I know OOF foreground can be a distraction, but it can add a bit of depth and feel to a photograph IMHO. I'm very open to different styles so I try not to be too conform to just one. Plus it's digital, I can afford to try different things

I figured the foliage was intentional. Despite it being unfashionable in the West (I didn't know that!) I STILL like it. I noticed the wrist angles and figured someone would comment on that but it's still a darn good photo.

Those light meters are NOT cheap pieces of kit, are they?
