great shots, can you give any tips to a beginner on how to catch things like that(besides patience), like certain camera settings?

The rest is more tenacity then anything.

happy new year ray! you are the RTH master! I've been seeing a lot of these guys around town recently. but they're always sitting on street lights... looking for dinner/breakfast i imagine. great shots. :thumbup:
