Removing a person from their background.

I asked this in another section of this forum and it was suggested that I ask here. I'm looking for a way to professionally remove a person from their background with Photoshop. I've used the magic wand tool and the pen tool, but neither of them offer very good results. Looking forward to all of your suggestions.
