Replacing the 18-70mm Nikkor lens.. better alternative?

OK, well in that case I wish there was a 1-1000mm f/1 pancake lens

Exclusively in the Nikon F mount of course, and free with a D3!

if you want sharper, Nikon makes a 17-55 f/2.8. other than that, you'll just have to buy another 18-70 if you want that whole range back.

I have a 17-55 and 80-200 and I don't miss the 25mm between them.

Just thought I'd mention the 18-70 is actually a very sharp lens and sharper than the 17-55 which performance wise is actually very underwhelming. The difference in cost amounts mostly to the f/2.8 and a heck of a lot to the much better build quality of the goldring lens.

I'm not sure there's a lot of lenses that can beat the 18-70 for sharpness in the wide-mid range around f/5.6, my experience is that it's pretty average at 70mm though.

Check out photozone.de for measurements of lens performance.
