Reputation System?

I used to do a lot of webby stuff for a job and we did a lot of research at one point on all the rep systems. What we found was that- by and large- the reputations pretty much went along with the number of posts. So, if someone had a higher post count, they tended to have a higher reputation. We didn't find many cases where it seemed like the positive/negative thing actually worked.

It was interesting.

It works on my photography forum - but as someone has said, it's small and easily managed (so far). I also use Xenforo and the associated plug-ins, which are MUCH better than vBulletin. I abandoned that a couple of years ago.

I think a big part of it is that a socially active person on a site is likely popular within a segment of the population and probably says a few good things here and there. As a result they've far more opportunity to get high rep. Meanwhile someone with less activity, but who might put in very good posts when they are present, has far less chance to garner rep points because they are not around as much.

You'll get the oddballs such as those who only post in "games" and so might have a huge post count with low rep and those who might have low post count but high rep.

Thing is unless you have some form of independant moderation and standard for what gets a rep point its meaningless. All it says is who's popular which might not at all tie into who knows anything about photography.

I have a prop system on a few of my forums. It gets abused regularly, I get constant complaints from being who get neg'ed, I've had to constantly establish limits to the number you can give daily, which forum topics it can be given it, and how many posts do you need to be able to give.

It's honestly more trouble than it's worth.

And besides, how is the other driver on the road going to know if he's a bad driver if you don't cut him off, honk, flash your lights, or give him the death stare?

:)

I don't mind the current "like" system we have, but could we add a "cuddly" button? That way everytime Lew says something cuddly, we can hit it? Lol
