OP, You might want to ask how to make these shots better
As they really look like you raised your camera and snapped away in AUTO mode or even with a cell phone.
You did give some though to it, but no thought (AutoExposure) to the exposure and colors in the image.

Now that I look at the EXIF .. that's exactly what you did
    Camera: Nikon D3000
    Lens: AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G
    Shot at 55 mm
Exposure: Auto exposure, Not Defined, 1/160 sec, f/6.3, ISO 100
    Flash: Auto, Did not fire
Focus: AF-A, at 3.4m, with a depth of field of about 94cm, (from about 40cm before the focus point to about 53cm after)
    AF Area Mode: Auto-area

    Camera: Apple iPhone 6
    Lens: iPhone 6 back camera 4.15mm f/2.2
    Shot at 83 mm
    Exposure: 1/120 sec, f/2.2, ISO 50

To restructure my request - I am looking for insights as to how to make these photos more compelling and the composition better. . I have decent proficiency with manual shots, and take some with iPhone.

Thank for your patience and feedback. These two are from Mt Tam looking towards SF and Napa Valley orchards.

    Ahh... O.K., then.

For composition, there are scads of books, articles, and on-line tutorials that cover composition at some level.

As for the shots you have already made, it is going to be difficult to point out where the better composition is without actually being there with you. Sometimes I see a better composition within the shot that can be made better by cropping, but frankly it is not always possible.

In the first one, I like the distant hills shrouded in haze, but the foreground is a little too heavy, or perhaps not needed at all.

In the second, you trained your camera on the alley, which in some cases might be a good shot, but here it just lacks interest. What has more interest for me is the colorful leaves juxtaposed against the sky. If you had shot just one tree-top with the sky for the background, it might have been better.
