Resizing images for social media

Until now I have been uploading full size images to my facebook page. Facebook has done a decent job compressing and the images appear clear and true to color. I just tried to resize my images for faster processing... and they look like sh*t when I posted them! All pixelated and fuzzy. I changed my resolution to 72 and my width to 851 pixels which was recommended in a tutorial I followed. Help...

Different sites have different requirements so you want to keep an original and make a small copy when needed. I use Bridge and Photoshop but there are many ways to do it.
Here's a copy of a large old photo I'm in the process of restoring. It's 72 pixels/inch with 851 pixel width and it looks fine.
