Retaining private sent messages

Forum Private Messages - received messages are retained normally, but my Sent messages are sent, but are not retained for my own viewing. I don't find any setting for this...
What am I missing? Shouldn't Sent messages be retained?

there is a box to check in your settings.

At the top of a forum page click on Forum Actions > General Settings.

On the left should be:
My Messages
Inbox
Sent Items
