Rico & Leah - Pix Heavy! (29 pix)

#29, They are not even married yet and she wants money. Wth?

I'm super confused on how these C&C threads turn into... "Who has a bigger ego-**** slinging contest"

I think they should change the name of this website to TPF "The PHIGHT Forum"

Where's the ego and mud slinging, i only said what i thought

Im not just talking about this thread. Just seems like everyone's comments are always negative.

How about a comment like.... "I don't care for picture #1... This is why and here is my advice on what I would have done differently."

Instead its.... You pictures suck and your creativity sucks. In a more beat about the bush way.
Just my opinion.

Ok #14 is the best, but i would have shot it from further back and to the left and in portrait at about 200mm with the brigde leading up to them

I'm sorry but i find these quite boring, nothing different to what i see in newbs first posts you could have used some dramatic flash techique's in some of these but they all look the same and i don't see any super sharp images

Ouch.. harsh.

But I do feel like I see same photos over and over (kiss, hug etc.). You need to be more creative.

Engagement photos...kiss,hug...lol...what do you expect soft porn?

"Boudoir Engagement" Shoots for you pros out there, just give me the credit for the idea. Its coming, be ready.

haha actually, seems like a lot of couple want stuff like that. I was reading on another forum and possibly in a blog how his clients will often want nude shots for weddings. Some will make a private session out of it and gift it to their husband before the wedding. Sometimes in MM you'll see some of those ads "looking for a photographer to shoot me and my fiance nude & sexy shots"
As much as the wife's cool about me taking nude photos of women, I haven't head for that direction just yet.

Additional, specific C&C:

Frame 5 Awful. Why? Unbalanced composition. Excessive depth of field brings distracting, ugly background into view. EMPTY space at left hand side of photo is as large as the woman, and is included in the picture for absolutely no logical reason I can think of, except, perhaps, that the photographer does not recognize that this pose calls for a VERTICAL camera orientation OR an entirely different, better, re-framing of the shot. The background is ugly, and diminishes the photo. I expect that it is B&W because it looked horrible in color.

By comparison, let's look at the horizontal composition of frame #14, and see what it has going for it.

The colorful fall foliage background is rendered out of focus, which is something called "background CONTROL", a hallmark of professional level photography. The background is used as a color element that INSTANTLY conveys the season of the year as "autumn". The two of them are shown interacting physically. The fence spans the entire width of the frame, and naturally leads from the left, and into her body. His hands and her hands visually overlap the fence, giv ing aded 3-D feeling and visual clues (as in science-like visual "cues"). The two of them share the same line of gaze, at one another. This picture works because it uses sound compositional devices that have been around for centuries, and which are grounded in "science",as well as the visual arts.

The first frame is unstudied, poor composition, and mis-uses the language of visual communication. The second photo is significantly stronger, and uses better visual cues, AND shows better overall command of the camera, and the role of photographer.

I was just thinking the same thing...maybe when a thread goes in the wrong direction the site admin should move it to a room called "the ring" as in boxing ring...for the "i know more then you do" peeps.

I don't think GSGARY was too off base. I know he can be harsh at times, but everyone on here is harsh from time to time. I don't think anything he said was meant to be offensive. My biggest problem with these are the sharpness. They don't seem very crisp. There are a few that could use some contrast adjustment as well as better lighting. I would have to say 14 is the best in terms of content and the colors are decent too. Really 10-14 seem to be decent in terms of color and contrast on my screen 24-26 as well. However, the lack of sharpness kills these for me personally. ( thats not meant to be a dig or offensive or whatever ).

7-9 are crap. Tilted, too small in the frame, and you decapitated him.

Dof is slightly too narrow in 2.

She probably won't like the stray wisp of hair in 5.

16 should've been portrait. D'oh.

Hooray for neon white, radioactive highlights on the shoulders.

Thanx prople for the CC!

"They are amazing! Thanks again Mo:)

Customer is happy. Learned new things. Moving on to the next project.

"customer is happy" calls photos "amazing".

You know, I'm not at all surprised. Customers are easy to please. A half-way decent in-focus shot that does not look like crap, and many people are happy. Just as many people are happy with a hamburger from McDonald's, or with Stouffer's frozen lasagna from a black, plastic tray, nuked in the microwave. Customers are VERY focused on emotional content, and on expression, and are often in love with the subjects of the photos...I have some snapshots of my son that I absolutely love, because I love him, but I can spot every photographic flaw and imperfection, and some of my most precious snaps of my son were snapped by my wife using her compact digicam, and are technically very weak, crappy "photographs". I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but the fact that a paying customer "loves" photos of her fiancee, or her little son or daughter, or her elderly grandmother, doesn't mean much to me in terms of how good the photography is, because those people would, quite often very happy with technically weak work churned out by anybody with a camera. Not saying this applies to this set, or to your work Mo, but "people" (non-photography-savvy people) are easily pleased as long as the emotional content of the images is there...but showing pictures like these to me, I could care less who he is or who she is...there's not enough there, photographically, to get excited about on about half of these...because I have absolutely ZERO emotional connection with these people...I see the camera and lens work and the framing....she sees her prince, he sees his princess...

One photographer is always better than the other so I won't continue. I get it, there are better photographers here than me that are ehh not impressed. I won't be the next best overnight but as long as I'm not decking I'm happy.

Do I think they are the best pics out there? HELL NO! Do I think these pix are crap? HELL NO! Am I worth $100 for a photosession? Yes Would I charge $500 for this e-session?? HELL NO!

So yeah I know where my place is as a photographer and I charge what I'm worth. I'm going to continue to learn as much as possible and there is a lot to learn till I am at a pro level.

And yes if a customer is happy with their pictures then I am happy as they are paying me. But these were not the $500 customers so no I am not gloating till I'm at that level.

So the day I come here with $100 worth of work and chargig $500 for it and gloat about my work and claim that I'm the best there is, don't hate.

Still in learning process. Thanx

Your points are all well and good Mo. My questions would be along these lines: So, how do you plan on getting rid of the Frame 5 type photos? How do you plan on getting past the stage of where you think a frame 5-type of image is a good picture, and AVOID MAKING it, right in the field or in the studio? How do you plan on transitioning from the $100 per session level to the $500 per session level.

What differentiates the $100 per session guy from the $500 per session guy from the $3,000 per session guy? Who do you think is "hating" on you? Are we hating on you by trying to help you improve, or are you just being a little bit reactive to the C&C you've been given?

Again...how do you plan on transitioning from the $100 to the $500 per session skill level?

My associate at work showed me some Professional Photos of her child's first holiday photo. By a Professional.

I am an amateur. They were horrible. She was very Happy. Leave it be.

Everyone has their own idea. So if anyone is Annie Liebovitz and shooting client shot likes she does the Pro/Amateur idea is moot IMHO.

Many of us enjoy photography. Many seem to be able to say they are Professional because they get paid. Many are at a low end of the spectrum of the pay scale compared to Annie and and are no better than the worst amateur when stacked up to her skills and $$$ is removed.

Keep going and don't stop. When you are good and you have gotten it, its obvious. Even if you are not a 'paid for professional'.;)

Mo, you could move to KC and earn a good living.
