Ring Flash

I broke down and splurged on a ring flash for my 10D. These are usually used for macro shooting...but more and more fashion and cosmetic photogs are using them for a trendy effect. Just watch and britney spears video or high fashion shoot and notice the catchlights in the models eye and you'll see the ring flash in the reflection.

so my question is how in the hell do they avoid red eye? Do they just correct it in post? I can't seem to shoot a pic with the ring flash without the dreaded red eye. Would it help if I used some high powered lights to condition the pupil first?

I never cared for it myself. It's too alien-like. Since the main purpose is to put the highlights in, the flash should be dialed way back with the main light coming from elsewhere. If that isn't enough to avoid the red-eye, try getting the flash further away from the lens.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll take it back and spend my $500 elsewhere.
