Does the

shadow, time of day, conversion kill this one? What do you think?

Yup. I think this shot would have been better if you'd picked a time where the lighting hit the underside of the rock formation. The tonal values look a bit flat too (the clouds look grey)

Nope color! Reason there is a distinct lack of texture. Also knowing what the true colors of the sky and this sandstone really are I know that golden hour time makes this a spectacular picture.

It does a bit.

I just dragged into GIMP.. (on layers, varying opacity %) I dodged the shadow area of the head of the rock, burned the rock below the shadow line, burned (quite strongly) the foreground of the picture, dodged the sky.

This looks better to me, but as you say, the time day isn't perhaps the best moment.

ahhhh, now I see the problem...for me anyway. That rock is 'looking' left and all the open space is behind it. Throws the picture out of balance. Maybe a vertical crop?

not really, but 2 pts for the chuckles. It's 'face is still looking away from the open space.

Hi

As the other mentioned, it seems to me to be a bit "flat". It needs some contrast. I would have chosen another time of the day, maybe a day with some clouds.
