Round File or Keep?

This past weekend I decided to venture out in the cold pre-dawn hours hoping to get a couple decent images of the Chicago skyline. This was the best of the group and I am unsure if I like it. I feel that the piers add character but lead your eye off the frame, but the lights recover your eye and lead you into the city. Other thoughts?

Odd that is the crop you went with... I think the charm in the first one is the detail in the rocks, ice and the wooden pieces... The city is too out of focus for the second to work imo.

There are more experienced photographers who can give you tips on how to improve the shot. But I have no experience with trying to capture a skyline.

Actually as an inquiry to the more experienced photographers here. Do you think it would help to reshoot with a lantern or something to illuminate the front part? Also, is this a shot that Focus stacking might work with? I am thinking back to that Rustic room Craig did a while back... but again. I haven't used either of these techniques myself. So, the experts would have to tell me.

I really like the idea of adding light to the old pier and rocks. I am not familiar with "Focus stacking", something I'll have to look into. Thanks for the comments, always learning something new.

Oh I found the thread I was thinking of. Turns out it was cgipson, for some reason I thought his name was scraig... Just confusing members now...

Any how, very impressive stuff. Also they use the focus stacking in Insect photography a lot so they can get the whole thing in focus at once.

But I was thinking it would be cool to have more detail on the city as well. Maybe slower shutter speed and smaller aperture, a tripod and a lantern.

Nice composition but a bit too blue for me, would like to see a daytime shot with white snow, etc.
