I can't seem to find the proper search to get a softbox or umbrella rig (umbrella and stand) for my sb600. Can someone point me in the right direction? I'd like to maybe pick up two smaller softboxes that mount straight on each flash (picking up a second one soon).

Thanks in advance!

I know Lumiquest makes a small medium and large one for the SB-600. I have the medium one. When your searching look for Shoe-Mount as your search words IIRC and just make sure you get a flashhead umbrella adapter with your light stand.

Sorry I looked and its called umbrella bracket. Any light stand with an umbrella bracket will probably work.

That stand only goes up about 3 feet, but if you are lighting a background that might be enough.

The umbella bracket will work fine for occassional use and on any light stand.

For regular shots you would want at least an 8 foot light stand.

Westcott also makes speedlight softboxes, the Apollo's.

I just bought a SB600 2 days ago--I guess i just thought it was going to make my pictures have that BRIGHT white look. It dont! I am thinking of taking it back--I really have no idea what it even does..my pictures look better when I just use the on-board flash in my D3000

Try putting a diffuser on it and aim it at the ceiling to bounce it.

You're probably right, MSTO, send the SB-600 back.

Terrilynne - have you read the manual? I'm seriously not being a smartass. The manual will walk you through using your flash on the hotshoe, using TTL as well as using your flash off camera using the CLS.

Additionally, try moving the angle of your flash. For instance, when holding the camera in portrait orientation, try turning the flash so it's up. Getting the bounce off the ceiling diffuses the harshness of the flash and will give an even light. Play around with different angles and such.

And honestly, that bright flash you think you want is probably what you really don't want. Don't take it back. It's not the flash. It just takes time.
