SB600 and D90 help!!

OK, I'm feelilng really idiotic right now.
My sb600 does not seem to be talking to my D90, or vice-versa.

I've been online, read my manuals, and nothing is working like it should. I probably missed one little (or big) thing that is messing things up.

Whatever mode I use (Aperture, Shutter,) and change the settings on purpose, the flash is supposed to compensate for the correct exposure...right? It is not happening. I may as well be shooting all manual and setting the flash to manual, too.

Can someone please go step by step through the settings I need to have on my camera and the flash to make it work correctly?

Really, I'm pretty smart but this is frustrating me to no end.

My main shooting will be at sunset on the beach with people, and indoors in large open rooms.

is your flash set to i-TTL or i-TTL BL or is it on manual?

Anything short of Auto mode it's all on you to decide the exposure.

It shows as TTL or TTL BL. No iTTL to be found. Which I kept thinking was weird. They are not the same, right?

sorry, i didnt mean to say 'i', the SB600 screen will just say TTL or TTL BL.

what's your metering set at? it should be matrix for this.

I believe it is.
I SHOULD be able to use it the way I described, right? RE: OP's reply above. Otherwise it's all manual...

yes, you should be able to change things like aperture and shutter speed and have the flash compensate as best it can when in TTL or TTL BL. if the flash is set properly and the camera is on matrix metering the only other thing i can think of is your exposure or flash compensation is set wrong. that or just try restoring the camera to all factory defaults and go from there.
