What are the criteria for the photos?

There is none. It is open to more then photography and their is no criteria. Just that you can only submit one photo.

I'm not going to be much help. Without any type of criteria, theme or idea of what you will be judged upon, I can not possibly begin to guess what they are looking for in an image.
What image would be better is entirely dependent on what the judge(s) are looking for or what they prefer.

Sorry, I'm sure that isn't the answer you were looking for.

Thanks anyways. I guess I am just looking for opinions.

The picture of the guy is much better, in my opinion. The second one is a photograph of pretty much nothing, one of those things where they "wow, that's very cool" impression you got did not translate into a picture very well.

Based only on these two photos, I think I'd go with the first. The second photo is nice, but I'm struggling to find a compelling subject -- the path isn't distinct enough to offer much in the way of leading lines.
