What is a good monitor screen resolution for reviewing and touching up pictures? I had a bigger screen hooked up to my laptop and the two were not even close to looking the same in color.

Changing the resolution doesn't affect color.

Plus there are different display types.

Most laptops have inexpensive TN (Twisted Nematic) type displays that have very limited accurate viewing angles, and that can't display 8-bit depth color (24-bit • 8-bits each of red, green, and blue).

For image editing, In-Plane Switching (IPS) type displays are desired for their accurate viewing angles. A lot of the inexpensive IPS screens also cannot show 8-bit depth colors.

Screen resolution is not the same as image resolution. Most digital images are reduced in size so the entire image can be seen on a display at the same time.
A Nikon D5100 delivers images that are 4928 x 3264 pixels. My 22" (diagonal) image editing display is 1600 x 1200. So, it can't show all of a 4928 x 3264 px image if the display is set to display 1:1 (1 image pixel is equal to 1 display pixel).
