Screen Size???

For the past year or so I have had my screen size set to 1280 x 1024 the normal size that most everybody uses is 1024 x 768 These two sizes aren't the same ratio. Which I found out today when my dad was working on my computer and he said he couldn't stand it because the screen was stretched horizontally.
So, my brother said that the correct ratio would be 1280 x 960. I set my screen to that and everything now seems elongated vertically.(compared to 1024 x 768 it looks correct)

I am just confused right now as to what screen size to use....

Any ideas/comments???
What screen size/monitor size do you use?
Is my head really that stretched?!?!?!? :lmao:

I always thought the size after 1024x768 was 1280x1024. ie: what you were using.

If you want to keep the width at 1280 and still be in the same ration as the 1024x768 resolution you have to set the height to 960... your brother was right.
It might just seem stretch because you're used to the widescreen look.

well, being a graphics person... I like to know what everyone else is seeing when they see one of my pictures.
So, if most people are using the ratio 1024 x 768 then I would like to use 1280 x 960. So it looks good on both their monitors and my monitor.

Now, another question...
When printed does it look like the 1024 x 768 ratio or the widescreen ratio? ie. 1280 x 1024

Hmm this is like talking about travelling through time! I honeslty don't know the answer to your question but here's what I guess.
I think the printed results would be exactly the same... because everything on each computer is exactly the same in relation to itself. (Did that make sense?)
I mean if on your widescreen, you have a picture showing widescreenish, then your 'page' that it's sitting on, is also going to be affected by the widescreen.

But I honestly don't know... Anyone know for sure?

I'm assuming Windows here...Right click on your desktop, go properties, and then click the settings tab.
There'll be a little slider on the left side and it'll tell you what it's set to... and you can even change it!! Wow!!

1024x768. So what's that mean?

That's how many little dots (pixels) you have making up your screen.

1024 pixels wide and 768 pixels high.

That's why it's such a pain when people post large photos on here, because they're bigger than this (actually anything bigger than 700 can be a pain) and you have to scroll around your screen to see the whole thing.

Oh and also... that's why, when I bought my latest digital camera, I only got a 2 MP camera. Because that's all I need for email my pics back home and looking at them on my computer. Because my screen only shows 0.7MP.

I know it's the pixel size...er whatever...but what does it mean if I change it? If I change it to...like what Santino's is, does that mean the resolution will be better, or something?

In theory yes, in practise no.
Here's a simple explination: A pixel is only as big as a pixel is. That means that you can't have 2 pixels in the space of one pixel. So if you increase your resolution on your screen, you don't increase your pixels per inch - you only increase the virtual (or physical depending on how attached you are to your computer) desktop size.

Try it. Increase your res up 2 stops on the little slider and you'll see how cool it is. To slide around your desktop just push the mouse against one of the edges of your screen and it'll scroll over. Just make sure you set it back.
