Second Try

OK, so for those following along, you will recall that I bought a roll of B&W film when I bought the battery for my bro-in-law's 35mm. The color shots I took were pretty bad, but it was way old film and it was f'in' cold and I was shaking. Anyway, most of these pics were taken the same day, so they, too, are shakey. The last two of Ella (that's the cat) were taken on a tripod.

They aren't great either, but I do like the second flag pic.

Anyway, here they are, and like before, comments are welcome.

Hey, where're the usual suspects to tell me it was a valient effort...did the suck that bad? And I thought they were better than the color ones...oK, not by much, but still...

They're all horrible. I don't think I've ever seen worse pictures in my life. Actually, I was thinking originally that you should use them as beer coasters, but I don't know that I'd want to see any of them through a beer to tell you the truth. There's a chance it could be magnified and yellow.

Now that you've read what the worst possible response could have been, here's what I really thought of them. I think the one with the person carrying the bag down the sidewalk is my favorite of the whole bunch. They are all very good with the exception of the shakey ones that you already noticed. Those will come in time. Your eye for photography is friggin awesome!!! Keep it up yo.

I really like the lines that you've captured here, the curve of the stairs and the one in a garden really stood out to me. Keep at it. It's been a long time since I've shot film, I think you've inspired me to try once again!

With regards to the camera shake you just need to relax, control your breathing and forget everything else (even the cold!) & just concentrate on what's in the viewfinder!

You did so much better, just like I thought you would. I like the big flag shot, and the light fixture. :thumbup: I agree with Hobbes, you have a really good eye, Jocose. With some people, developing that eye is half the battle!

Thanks for the kind words. Yes the shake was cause I was shivering cuz it was friggin' cold. Also, I never realized that a 70-300mm lens could be so f'ing heavy.

These will stay in the off topic until I am happy with my film shots. I'm still more interested in digital, but I feel that I can't definitively say that until I've tried my hand at film.

My personal favs:

• The woman walking down the road
• The barred window (although I think if I do it again, I will do it head on)
• The second flag shot
• The second to last shot of Ella (isn't she just the cutest cat in the world?)

I have another roll of color in the camera, and I think I will try a few more times, especially when the weather starts getting nicer.

I also think that they are a tad over exposed. I was having a hard time getting the meter to 0, it was always one to the - or one to the +...any suggestions?

What camera are you using and does it have exposure compensation?

I think that only works on women/men at the bar...never thought about it in terms of a photo. It could be possible if it was a picture of a woman/man methinks.

Are your films DX coded and does the cam have an exposure compensation control?

If yes then set the exposure control to +1 ( I think! Dose + effectively increase the recorded ISO speed of the film?)

If not just set the ISO setting for the film to 800 instead of 400 or 1 stop over what film speed you're using. This should under expose the whole film by 1 stop.



At least I hope so! It's been a long day and I might be thinking backwards! I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong! :thumbup:
