I have android apps for both phone and tablet that work great with both the K3ii and K1Mii, but the little Pentax IR is really handy. It actually has multiple functions. It will focus and release the shutter, activate a powered zoom, or allow you to change the shutter delay. I use a shoe mounted flash controller, so that's not an issue anyhow. The only problem I've had with it, is in bright sun it can be a PITA.

Canon has a similar unit that will interface with the power-zoom on the 18-135 Nano USM. What I haven't determined is if it's any better than using the cell phone application though.

My cell/tablet app is better then the IR remote for some applications, because it allows so much more control, everything from changing camera settings, to transferring images. Someone said earlier that when tethered, the cell phone app doesn't work, but frankly it's redundant when tethered anyhow.

I bought a zoom lens for the k1000 whilst in Germany, then dropped it into the fountain in Italy.
