Never done a self portrait, so I gave it a try...

Well, I can't now. I took everything apart so my studio area could be remodeled. They just got started, so it should take about two weeks.

Thoughts on what I can do to make the photo better?

If you ask me: nothing.
I like it as it is and really like the all black side of your face as opposed to the lit one.
Well, maybe your clothes are a tad too dark, so your hand seems to float. But that could as well have been your plan, what do I know?

Someone suggested that I darken everything except my face and hand/gun so it looks like I'm appearing out of a dark silhouette.

Nice shot, but it looks like the gun is missing the clip. And a darker backround will maybe look better Imo.

I left the clip out, no special reason. I was just practicing on taking self portraits so I didn't worry about all the details.

I did do the darker back ground on a few shots, but my silhouette is harder to see that way.

I did another version, this time I darkened the hat and jacket.

This is very cool! I like the second version better. It seems to be sharper. For a shot like that, you definitely want the features to be sharp.

I love the picture but as to the gun handleing??? Rule #1: Keep your finger off the trigger till you are ready to fire I do think it would look more professional if you did it with your finger in the right place. + I think the mag should be in

By the way what is the model of the gun?? Apears to be a 1911 varrient?

Honestly though, I think it is a superb shot and wish I could do something like it!

Guns don't kill, people do. In a controlled area, YOU make the rules. Sorry if it seems like I'm bitching at ya about your comment, I'm just tired of hearing about the finger on the trigger BS. I mean, I don't complain how you hold your camera... with the right about of force to the head, that could kill ya too ;-).

I put the finger on the trigger to give it that extra emotion like a movie poster.... which is what I was going for. I'm more interested in the dramatics than what is considered "professional". Though next time I'll remember to put the magazine in. All my other shots are of me pointing the gun at the camera where you can't see the bottom (photo below).

It's a Springfield 1911 Trophy Match I got last week just to use as a prop. All my other guns are black and wont appear against the dark back ground.
