Why do you need an UWA that is 2.8?

I personally feel that it's a bit of a waste of money.

Definitely, get a 1.4 instead. Either go all in or not at all.

I don't. At all.

Really? Maybe we shoot differently but I am not concerned about dof when shooting ultra wide. I am also normally shooting off a tripod when in low light. Plus with the d800 the ISO could make up some of the difference in stops.

I do like 2.8 for the middle and high focal lengths but for uwa is just seems unnecessary.

I looked through all my flickr photo's, and found 2 images that used 17mm & 2.8 for the "wide-angle-but-with-bokeh" style photo's. Everything else is over f9... HAHA. Clearly I use it even less than I thought. 16-35 it is. Now I just need to sleep on it.

If you can find me a production 16-35 or 14-24 that has a 1.4 constant aperture, I'll pay ONE MILLION dollars for it.

OIC, Lee filters makes a holder for the Nikon 14-24 but it still comes up 11mm short.

And that holder uses larger/different filters than i have

Well I really wanted a truck for the longest time but after some serious honestly I realized I would only utilize the truck to haul things around a few times a year. The rest would be spent driving on the high way and using extra gas.

Forget about the 50mm 1.8G. Get a AF-D F1.4 50mm used instead.
Wide angle wise, there's also AF-S 17~35mm F2.8 used, or even more affordable, a used AF-D F2.8 20mm. But seriously, 14-24 is what you need.

I'd skip the 20mm, just not wide enough. I nearly bought that lens after my 24mm 2.8 afd but got the 18-35 instead

If you think the 20mm isn't wide enough, you should be doing panoramic shots instead.

As I've said earlier, no to the 14-24. Why the D?

Why the G?

Yes the G is probably better in many ways, but after searching all the comparison articles I can find on google, the difference isn't worth the price difference. Plus, a good used lens is a good lens, no need to get a brand new one if you can find a good used copy.

I have both the AF-D F1.4 50mm and F2.8 20mm. The F1.4 50mm cost me $280, and the 20mm at around the same price range too.
The F1.4 50mm is awesome, no complain. The 20mm is good enough on my D700, but I'd think you need at least the AF-S 17~35 F2.8 to have decent image quality on the D800. I recommend the 20mm because it's extremely light and compact for the convenience, and low price for the affordability.
