Hey guys,

I accidentally ordered a Nikon D1 on ebay (easier than it sounds), and I was wondering if anyone knows if theres a way to change out the sensor in it. maybe for one from the D3s or something similar. 2.7MP just doesn't seem like much these days.

Thanks,
Dylan

i've heard of people "accidentally" buying things on ebay, but how do you do that? How do you "accidentally" place a bid? If you don't want it, you don't want it.

I don't think the logic of upgrades work well with electronic devices like DSLRs.

It seems like it would make sense though, since all full frame sensors should be the same size and everything, I don't mind if i accidentally break the camera trying this, i think it would be a cool experiment. And I only paid 20 bucks for the body with a couple lenses

Wanted the lenses that it came with, didn't realize the body was included in the auction lol

Changing a sensor seems like pain. You would also have to find a D3 sensor, which is the most expensive part of the camera. I would just try to resell it for as much as you can and just buy a new body.

  1. The D1 is a crop frame camera. It doesn't have the same sensor opening size as a full frame camera.
  2. The tech in the camera isn't there. It's wired to support a CCD sensor, you can't just slap on whatever sensor you want and expect it to work.
  3. Whatever you attempt is just going to result in the destruction of the camera.
If it still works, use it. It's better than not having a camera, and in the right hands with the right lenses it will produce great images.

For $20 I would just keep it.

I guess as long as you never want to print bigger than 4x6, it could be OK... At the very least, it might look good on a shelf.

You could try selling it, but you'll probably have to throw some other stuff in with it and make someone buy it as a package deal, like you did.

Yep all that, plus the image processor and the image buffer would be incompatable for even a CCD crop sensor that has more MP.

The D3 was the first full frame Nikon, so if you were going to attempt so huge an undertaking you would need to stay with image sensors from all the APS-C size D1, and D2 variants.

Not to mention the Analogue to Digital Converter, the Powersupplies, the software.

CCDs need custom designed supporting hardware. To get a new sensor to work you'd need to replace all the boards with compatible ones from the D3.

Sorry but you're outta luck.
