Sent back my 50mm f/1.4, ordered 50mm f/1.8

Did you use the 1.4 before you returned it?

Should have kept it, IMO...

If I would have taken it out of the box, opened it, used it, I would not have been able to send it back. So are you saying my kit lens is better?
I'm saying that if you had taken it out of the box, opened it, used it - you would not have sent it back.

You sent back a GREAT lens.. for a OK lens.... that is the difference! :)

Dam#!! You are making me want to send back my f/1.8 when it gets here.

If it's purely a budget thing, I can understand that. Money is tight for everyone right now...

If you really could afford the 50mm 1.4, that was the better choice in the long run, IMO. The 1.8 is not bad, but you will likely replace it with the 1.4 eventually... Might as well skip that step if you can.

You NEED the 1.4!!!! Just for the VASTLY improved focusing.. and FAST focusing speed... and don't forget the beautiful, creamy bokeh that it can give you! lol!

Spend the saved money on a flash.

50mm 1.8 + Flash > 50mm 1.4

The only thing that annoys me with the 1.8 is the autofocus. It's a little slow compared to USM lenses, but it was worth the savings in price for me.

Sometimes deciding to go with a less expensive item is not an indication of being cheap but an indication of being financially responsible. Financial responsibility is part of the equation for any major purchase. So don't feel bad UNLESS you've got money to burn. Just words of wisdom that will hopefully make you feel better about your decision or worse if you've got money to burn. But if that's the case you can purchase it anytime.;)

You may not see much difference right now between the f/1.8 and f/1.4 as far as the image quality goes. In fact, you may not notice much in the future. But in certain conditions, you will see them. Especially when you stop down the lens a little bit. (i.e. f/2 -F/4), you may see the pentagon shaped bokeh mainly due to number of aperture blades is 5. (vs 8 in the 50mm f/1.4). Here is a photo I took that show the iris of the lens.

The on the left is f/1.4 while the one on the right is the f/1.8 version 1. They were set at f/4

Since the f/1.4 has more blades, so the iris appear to be more circular than the f/1.8 version. (I or II)

But as I said, I do not think you will see the differences in terms of optical quality right now. By the time you do and like to get the f/1.4 or other better lens, you can always sell it back. (Just don't break it)

The 50mm f/1.8 lens is a popular lens so I do not think you will lose much when you sell it. 3 years ago, the EF lens sold around $89 new at Adorama. And now, I saw people list it on craigslist around $8x used.

Thank you, I am fairly new to photography, so I don't think my decision was too bad....and i saved money. As I progress in my photography, that will be about the time I list my camera and lenses on ebay for an upgrade. I already have my eye on the Canon 60D....something about having an "entry-level" DSLR camera is bugging me....

If you want good bokeh, there is one lens you need and is not Canon 50 1.8 OR a Canon 50 1.4. It's a Sigma 50 1.4.. it has beautiful bokeh characteristics. The Canon 50mm line needs an update IMO.

The bokeh on the 50 1.4 also shows pentagon highlights the more you stop down, the aperture blades are not circular as far as I know? I may be wrong though. I know this lens is an old design though.

+1 on the Sigma 1.4! It does some lovely work, as long as you get a good copy of the lens!

I got my lens, but before i even got it, I did some research. The f/1.4 was more expensive, however seemed to be a tad better lens than the f/1.8. To save money, I sent it back because while waiting for delivery, I was slapping myself when the f/1.8 seems to do close to the same thing. I'm frugal...what can I say.

It's ok lil lady none of us here are making you have a guilt trip here :) we understand. But joking aside I definitely feel ya, I was able to get the 1.4 model during Christmas (thanks to my wifey with B&H gift cards). But with our 2nd child we(meaning I) have to put toys on hold for a while; that is to say after I buy a macro and/or telephoto lens lol.

Yup. That's why I said "or other better lens". From what I read, the Sigma seems to be rounder around f/4 while the Canon is, well, more octagonal shaped. I believe it is due to the 9 round shaped blades. :D

Ya know, I pretty much have only looked at Canon products and haven't looked much into Sigma. I under the 1.4 is better, but I will try and start with the 1.8. Anyway, we are finishing our basement, so a dollar at a time :) Unfortunately, as you can see, this tree in our backyard is fresh out of $100 bills...........
