hey guys i want to know what you guys recommend for quick shots , i want to capture a some one skateboarding or something but blur the background not the subject , and ideas ? thanks in advance , also im using a d40

To blur the background, while keeping the subject sharp...you will want a shallow Depth of Field (DOF). There are a few factors involved with DOF. The first is the aperture of the lens. A larger aperture (smaller F number) will give you a shallower DOF. The longer the focal length, the more shallow the DOF. The closer you are to the subject, the more shallow the DOF. And the farther away the background is, the more out of focus it will be.

A typical 'kit' lens has a max aperture of F3.5 to F5.6...which really isn't that big. So while you can still get a fairly shallow DOF. It would be much easier with a lens that has a bigger maximum aperture like F2.8 or F1.8 etc.

Also, please change the image in your signature. It's bigger than the allowed size.
• Any images used in signatures will be a MAXIMUM size of 500x100 pixels.

Try panning movements, tracking the subject. Set the
autofocus to continous af. Higher ISO's
(fast shutter-speeds) and wide aperture.
Normal (Evaluative exposure) or centre weighted exposure.

ok i have a general idea, thank you both , guess its up to trial and error :)
