Thoughts on this one? What is/isn't working?

I like the shadows and the wood, but the metal railing in the corner is a distraction. I would try a different angle to exclude it. On this shot you could crop, but you'd end up chopping off some of the shadows on the right and/or the top. However, that still might be preferable to the way it is, especially if you do most of the cropping at the top, at least for me.

From a Noob's perspective: I can't decide whether the metal railing is a distraction or if it is important to let me know what I'm looking at. I think if I could identify the shadows as people, then I wouldn't need the railing and it would be a distraction. I think the pic is pretty cool. But if I could tell what was making the shadows it would be awesome.

I am not a huge huge fan of black and white, I think that perhaps there is more to it than meets the eye. I know folks go crazy about it and I would be interested in really understanding more than
I could give you better input. I do enjoy them now and then but I happen to live in a world of color..

What I see here is that it could use some more contrast, maybe try a levels adjustment. The railing does not bother me.

The wood and shadows work for me. Not sure how I feel about the black/missing upper-left corner...and the upper right corner. I can't find a balance with the corners. But I may be just subconsciously comparing it to a similar shot you posted...also shadows on wood surface.
