I went to a wrestling match today. With a D70 and Sb-600 i attempted to take pictures, shooting 500 at f1.8 i couldnt get sharp pictures. I even tried taking off the flash and setting shutter speed to 1000, it was dark but still not sharp. Could this have to do with my camera? dust?

Hard to diagnose without examples

Post some pictures with the EXIF data, that should help.

-trusting the camera's AF in a setting too dark to focus?

-Manual focus with an incorect di-opter setting?

-inSANEly shaky hands?

let's start with 1 & 2.

1 was shot at 1/90th second, f/1.8, ISO 200.
2 was shot at 1/180 second, f/1.8, ISO 500.

2 is certainly sharper than 1. This is probably due to the faster shutter speed in your case. The ISO was upped, which helped.

Also, try on your D70 to up the ISO to 800 or even 1600, to allow for an even faster shutter speed, or a larger DOF (smaller aperture)

keep in mind that you'll get better sharpness when you stop the lens down a couple f-stops to f/2.2 or so. wide open like that, most lenses have a hard time being razor-sharp.

try shooting at 2.8 to 4 next time and see the difference

I think you're dealing with very shallow DOF and slow shutter speeds. I really dont think they are all that bad considering the conditions.
