I'm having a hard time with the focus at night. Any tips on shutter speed, ISO and f-stop?

Flash with AF assist beam enabled. Autofocus set to Single shot mode. ISO 400,500,640. f/5.6. Shutter speed 1/180 second for flash synch if your camera goes that fast.

If you have Live View on your camera, that can be used to great advantage when trying to get perfect focus. Specially if you use a tripod. Zoom in on your screen to the part you want to be in focus, and use manual focus to get that part of the picture sharp. Then just shoot! It can be easier to see on your screen than in the viewfinder. You can also take test pictures when using a tripod, and adjust your focus if it is off. The test pictures do not have to be of greatest quality - you just want it to take as little time as possible, and then adjust to your perfect settings after you get the composition and focus where you want it.

You can use any light. A flashlight will work.

Auto focus uses contrast to work. In dim light the contrast is to low. Learn how your camera works.

So I would shine the flash light on te subject and the auto focus will work?

I sometimes set my flash on the subject, then walk back to my cam/tripod and focus

It was so dark I couldn't see the bike in this pic to focus on it

I use a Petzl Amazon.co.uk: petzl headlamp
for setting up some tripod shots, first light/before sunrise.
