Should I buy a Canon Rebel?

See its a bit hard for me to determine which camera produces better quality pictures when both pictures' qualities have been altered.

You won't be able to pick the best camera from internet sized images anyway - most are only around 1/3rd (or smaller) the size from out of the camera. The resizing hides a lot of errors and with even basic sharpening and editing you can buff up a shot a reasonable amount. Suffice to say you really can't tell on websized images.

Honestly stick with your original plan if you want to go the DSLR rout - however if you are really just going to stick with one or two entry level lenses you might find that a superzoom bridge camera body might be more worth while for your shooting style. The features and manual controls are present, though can be more fiddly sometimes - but its a single camera that does all. Further as Ron has said the camera you have now already has many of the manual features that you can experiment and get to grips with.

If however you want the DSLR keep an open mind about lenses - the power of the DSLR (or any SLR) is to be able to change lenses to best suit the curret needs.
