Should I ditch my Sony?

Ok, so the question should be ... currently what lenses are working Wedding Photographers using.

... and are these types of lenses available in Sony A mount ?

This is the post ive been looking for, im struggling with the same thing, although i have slightly more gear invested than you do. I have an a550 with kit lens, Tamron 70-200, minolta 50mm 1.7, and minolta 28 2.8. Im at a stage where im not desperate to sell, although i have tested the waters (craving a d7000) . Ive posted on ebay, here and other sites for around 2000 for everyhing. I like Sony, but it seems Nikon is easier to find lenses both cheap and decent. not to mention resale value is a lot better. good luck man!

For the amount of money you are spending you aren't going to find GOOD third party anything for any camera. It won't change any if you switch brands. Other than you will sink a ton of money into buying a new camera and you'll have even less money for accessories.

Sony has earned it's spot as the #3 DSLR and the third party accessories that are available for Canon and Nikon are available for Sony.

Yes sell it and get Olympus
nope. I ha an e510 before i got my a330. It was even harder to afford their tiny selection of lenses.

The entire Four Thirds\Nikon F\Pentax K\Sony Alpha\Minolta MD\M42\Leica M\Leica R\Canon FD\Contax\Olympus OM\T2 selection of lenses is tiny?

How interesting that you would say that.

I was not referring to the entire catalog of APS-C censor compatible lenses. I was speaking specifically about the Olympus Evolt line, I owned one for a year and lenses were hard to find and expensive for its mount. Troll

I was looking at resale or trade in values and they aren't very great lol. That alone may get me to stick it out.

at the rate you're going, it might have been cheaper to have started with one of the CaNikon cameras in the first place.

Well, if you were me and you were at this inpass what would you do?

I have only my self and inexperience to blame, but I'm willing to take your advice.

Ask yourself how many reporters use Sony, and how many use Nikon and Canon

I am a Sony shooter, though not by choice (even if it was by choice I would never become a Sony Fanboy as I know that there is no one superior brand). I migrated from film to this through the Minolta Maxxum path (my wife's camera line up).

I do not see anything severely wrong with the couple of cameras that I have used (A100/A55) to make me sell it all for Canon/Nikon ... though I will have to add that I do NOT do portrait photography. I have taken great images from the low end A100 using a combination of Maxxum lenses and third party lenses (not the cheap stuff).

Yes, the resale value is not as good as Canon/Nikon ... mainly due to demand. Canon/Nikon shooters are more abundant and upgrade more frequently.

I think the reason for the lack of "Pro" shooter usage of the Sony/Minolta DSLR line has to do with their (Sony) own line up of lenses (not third party).
Sony does not have an extensive array of various apertured focal lengths ... this limits what particular shooters want to do with the camera.

It also does not help that Sony currently does not have a full frame camera (they are in transition).

I suspect that Sony will not aggressively attack the "Pro" market. They will bring out Full Frame sensor cameras but I do not think they will invest the money into equalling the lens line up as Canon/Nikon ... to me that does not seem like a profitable route to take (in a business point of view) though they will continue to bring out high end lenses of the G and Zeiss type.

The key point you have to remember is that the Sony camera (or any DSLR) can take a great image if you have the knowledge and quality lenses. There are many good lenses that Sony has, the Zeiss line is targeted at the low/mid range of focal lengths which would appeal to portrait photographers (as mentioned earlier, I am not a portrait photographer so I really do not know what the Wedding Photographers use).

Top of the line, with lenses that last forever would be Leica, or Sony with Zeiss lenses.

Do you really want to be shooting weddings with 'affordable' aka 'cheap' lenses regardless of what brand they are?

Sony, Canon and Nikon all have quality lenses but they also have the cheap lenses that you want to stay away from. All I'd say is don't buy cheap when you're shooting a wedding, just because they are friends or family shouldn't justify potentially lacking work.
