Sigma 70-200 2.8. Thoughts?

I am thinking about getting this lense. I just wanted to know what your thoughts are about this lens. And some sample pictures would be great as well! Thanks!

I have the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 OS version and I LOVE that lens.
I have a friend who shoots with the non OS version and she loves it. She does say it's a bit slow on the focus for sports, but sports are not her specialty, so she's extremely pleased with it.
It is a bit soft wide open, but when comparing to a consumer lens soft is sharp as hell. Stopped down even 1/2 stop it's tack sharp.
I shoot sports with mine and the focus is fast and silent.
For portraits it's often my go to lens. Especially for newborns! I LOVE this lens.

This lens is on my short list. In fact, if not the next one (after the 50mm 1.4 Sigma in a couple of weeks), it will be the one after that.

Its an awesome lens. I use it for concerts/shows/sports all the time. I have the OS version.

I recommend looking into a macro with a little more length. Maybe a 90 if you can afford it. I have a 90 and at times I feel like its even a little short

Thank you for the recommendation. I will most certainly consider it. I'd be looking for an all around macro. I assumed 50 would do ... but I am most certainly open on this one.

Cost says I'll probably stick with a 50, maybe a 70mm since by the time that comes, I'll have my 50mm 1.4 Sigma.

Why would you purchase 2 50mm lenses? If you aren't shooting fast moving subjects with it just purchase ONE and invest your money in a different focal length. That's a bit of a silly waste of $ when you are building your first lens kit.

Sorry to hijack to the OP.

Mainly for the minimum focus distance. For 50mm macro, the subject is going to be closer to the front element of the lens than when you use a longer focal length lens. If you are planning to take a photo of an insert, it is going to be a little tough when you like to obtain 1:1 ratio. Imagine a yellow jacket is only an inch away from you.

The other issue is often auxiliary lighting is needed for macro shots. It is harder to light the subject when the camera/lens is close to it.

I like the Sigma better than the Tamron. But I like the Canon better than either.

The Tamron is slow as hell.

I don't know what you shoot with, but if it's Canon, then there is a 60mm macro lens that you can get for a crop sensor DSLR.
