I am looking for a lens for my new Nikon D7000 digital camera. I want to be able to shoot good lacrosse photos even in low light. Several knowledgeable people on this site suggested a 70 mm or 80 mm- 200 mm lens. Sigma was recommended over Nikon to save a few bucks.

1 am looking at the following 2 lenses;

Sigma 70-200mm f 2.8 EX DG APO MACRO HSM II - $1,200

Sigma 70-200mm f 2.8 EX DG OS HSM - $2,400

It looks like the only real diffence is the OS (Opital Stabilization). Is it worth the extra $1,200 for this feature???? Any other recommedations???

For that price range you may also want to consider a used nikon 80-200 2.8. You can pick one up for about $900 if you look around a little. This is the route I opted to go and I am very pleased with the decision. It does not have VR, but on a mono or tripod I have not missed it much.

I also have a couple of sigma lenses and have overall been very pleased with them. I think they make a great piece of equipment for the hobbyist photographer.

Good luck.

The non-OS version is only $799 at Adorama, where are you getting your prices from? I've owned the lens and it works very well, used it for most of the wildlife shots over the last couple years.

I have the non-OS version.

For your intended purpose, OS doesn't matter. Your shutter speed needs to be high enough to freeze motion, and therefore camera shake (the problem OS adresses) is not an issue.

I'd save the money man. And like said, the non OS verion retails for $799 just about everywhere

I have the 70-200 2.8 and I am completely in love with. Freaking Great lens! Maybe one day I will move to all nikon but I just cant justify the price sticker right now when my sigma give me everything I want and more. I was able to get the 70-200 used from a photography store for 500 and then get a brand new 18-55mm 2.8 for about 500 and I got the Tokina 11-16mm Now I cover most of the spread and never spent over 600 for anyof them ! That combined with two primes 50mm and 85mm 1.8 and I am very happy. Still want a macro to play with but now I am buying FLASHes SB600 and SB700 and SB900s. Lighting is now my new adventure! Lots to learn!
