I got one of these to use with my Rebel XT and I use it on ETTL/Auto mode. All of my shots were underexposed. Then I messed around with manual mode and the shots were *way* too bright. I tried reading the manual but it was not helpful at all (I was completely lost). I thought ETTL was supposed to calculate everything for me but it's hardly an improvement over the built in flash.

I was wondering if anyone familiar with this flash can give me tips. Should I toss it and buy a 430EX instead?

Sometimes happens this kind of thing, if you want to take advantage of ETTL and don't want to get lost in manual mode, my advice is to use ETTL and increase or decrease the flash compensation. If you don't know what it is, or how to change it, check your flash manual.
Good luck
