Hello! So this question may be seemingly obvious to answer and I do apologize on my part for the ignorance. I recently purchased a Sigma 24-70 mm lens I have a Canon 5D Mark 1 and I am clueless. I attempted to attach the lens onto my camera directly and it was not locking in. I thought I better stop after the second try in hopes of not damaging it. Do I need a mount for this lens? I honestly have watched numerous videos and yet in the description, nobody links any mounts or talks about any. What am I doing wrong?

Hi if this is the Sigma for canon then it should screw and lock like all lens, be aware that the lenses and ‘keyed’ as such and although may appear to fit more than one way they won’t lock.
You can see the red spot at the top as well as the contact pints at the bottom of the lens, usually the lens connects when that spot is at about 2 or 3 o clock and the rotates anti clockwise to lock it in place.

Sent from my mobile device because I’m either outside or too lazy to get my MacBook..

Sigma makes the same lens in multiple mount types. It's the same lens, just with a different mount.

They also make both crop and fullframe lenses, however for canon they only use the fullframe EF mount (not the EFS). So even a crop sensor only lens will fit to a fullframe only canon camera (though because its a crop lens it might not work and its rear protrusion might be too far back that it can hit the mirror when it flips up to take a shot - so do be careful with that).

Check the Sigmar lens, it should say if its Canon, Nikon etc... If its Canon it should mount without issues if everything is normal.

The back end of ANY canon EOS lens looks like this:

Look at red arrow.

That Sigma lens does not have a Canon EF or EFS mount. It will not fit any current Canon DSLR.

Need to sell the lens and get one in Canon EF MOUNT

Hello! Check the paper/box/your receipt to find out what mount the Sigma lens has. If it is designed to fit your Canon, then it should say so.

Can you return the Sigma lens and get your money back?

Hi I am Going to add to the advice and possibly your worries
Not all sigma lenses work with all canon bodies
There is or was a web site, but I am going back a few years
Ok there was an article on re chirping older sigma lenses to
Work with canon digital
There are also two newer posts on combatability issues with
The canon 1dx11 and the new R series mount
