could it be a small LED flashlight? i guess i'm just concerned cause wouldn't this affect the lighting on the face as well? or is that just the catch 22 to get this affect?

Not so much a catch 22, the catch light is the biproduct of lighting the subjects face well. In the example you linked to, there is a big ol' 36" or larger softbox on either side of the camera, which creates the key and fill lighting on the subject. Their eyes reflect the entire room, and those big ol' softboxes turn into a tiny dot on their pupil, so if you try pointing an LED flashlight at 'em you're not going to see any catch light at all...and probably screw up the ambient light.

it only works in JPEG mode, and Josh's solution lasts only about five minutes and then deletes itself.
