size to store image as in camera

IS there a useful way to determine what image size to save a digital picture as in my camera when i take it? IVe been using nikon d7500 and saving them to the largest size as i felt that would give me the best cropping possibilities if needed. But the file sizes are way out of this world..

SO im wondering if some things do better as smaller size.

If you are only sharing images via e-mail then lower resolutions are useful, but for any proper photos I always save at the highest available resolution. I'll usually reduce the size after editing for sharing on the web & sometimes won't keep the high resolution copy after that.

On one occasion I discovered I'd left my spare cards behind & was running out of space so reduced the saved size to 6MP (enough for an A4 print).
