Snow!

I'm the Maintenance Supervisor for the city Parking Authority, but when it snows the entire department pitches in. A couple years ago the Union threatened to throw me out of the truck but nothing became of it. Oh yeah, that would sure be a threat. I'd just have to drive around, drinking coffee, watching my guys having to pick up the slack. I think they dropped it when I started pleading for them to carry through. The Union always does the opposite that management asks :lmao:

i will say 17" in an urban setting is a world of difference from a rural setting.......while we (uot in the sticks) can just keep pushing it back,cities ultimately have to remove it.

Yesterday's was my parents' first real winter storm in Montreal, so they didn't pay attention when my brother told them not to leave the house. They thought they were too good and crafty for the snow, so they jumped into the car. They simply wanted to pick up my brother and give him a ride home from work. The trip lasted half a block. If it wasn't for a passerby who offered his help, my parents would still be there spinning wheels and, at 69 and 77 years of age, trying to push the car out of the mountain of snow they tried to drive over. SMH.

We had our blizzard a few days before Christmas (40 mph winds, 14 inches of snow, up to 4 foot drifts).

When the wind blows like that it packs the snow and makes it good for cutting into blocks, like for making an igloo or a snow wall.

This year I'm building snow walls to act as snow fencing, and to influence the direction wind flows across my yard so blowing snow goes where I want it to go.

Thanks for the good wishes, Terri. We keep telling ourselves we know what to do about it. Winter tires are mandatory after Dec.15 (whew!), and there is an army of blue-collars and contractors that swing out and clean the stuff. Some do it better than others. Our little "city" of Pointe-Claire has had the roads more or less open before the last snowflakes fell. The "big city" of Montreal will take the next 7 days to dig out. But in fairness, they have little place to put it - see images later.

Blowing stuff is worse than falling stuff. I stay off the roads when the winds are up, mainly because visibility goes from OK to nil in seconds, and there's no warning. Fortunately, most people heeded the warnings and stayed home, or at least off the roads.

Yeah, it's an acquired skill to know which snowpiles you can drive through and which you can't. And you can't get anywhere without snow tires (the good ones!). At the beginning of snow season, lots are similarly stuck, but by the end (say March), there are just a few that haven't learned.
