Some BMX action shots.

So just out of curiousity, what are the options for properly exposing the rider in scenarios like this if you don't have a big enough flash? I find that when I'm in situations like this I always end up blowing out the sky.
 
There are a couple of things you can do.

You trade off power for distance, if you can.

If you're short on power, you have to get the light closer (not necessarily the camera if you're doing OCF).

You can add more lights. Adding lights adds power..

One of the reasons I recommend the style of cheap radio triggers I do, is that 2 speedlights can be mounted on a single receiver so you can double the power.
 
But what if you don't have the ability to setup lights? Would either a circular polarizer or a ND filter help to control the sky?

Well... Thank you for the compliment. :) But I've pretty much shown the extent of my PP Skills.

I don't think there is much more I can do...
