I also prefer #2, but because it is stronger, weirder in a way.

But a photograph does not need to depict happy faces to be a good photograph.

The make up in the first is not even (i.e. the lips, the lipstick is not fully coated). IN # 2 the lipstick is there, but its a little sloppy. Also the bandaid bothers me However they do have some nice lighting

I don't think any 'one' critique from anyone defines whether it "makes or breaks" a certain image. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion I also take it with a grain of salt.

Yeah make up isnt great. And yeah band aid is weird.
