I like the first one. The elderly always make a good subject, especially in B&W because of their wrinkles and white hair. It's also like a story. You wonder what they've been through.

I don't like #2, but I don't like selective coloring in general. I 99% of the time it looks cheesy.

I've also used that kit lens before and hated it. Get the 50mm 1.8. It's cheap and you'll love it.

#1 is awesome.
I really like the composition and the fact that he is bending a little bit to the front makes it bettter.

Also not a fan of selective coloring. There are some rare occasions where it works.. but those are few and far between.

#1 is pretty nice even though his eyes and nose are OOF.

I also like the first one. The second shot would have been nice if it wasn't for the selective colouring stuff.
I'd say; get a different lens, something with some more zoom. I have the same camera but never liked the kit-lens. I got a Tamron VC Di 70-300 SP. I am really happy with it and compared to this the kit-lens is a little piece of junk.
